Zounds!

Did you know? Perennial Archie-comic exclamation words that we usually or probably assume to be of Victorian origin, actually came about because of a Elizabethan-era law banning swearing on stage. The playwrights (Shakespeare included) invented several “minced oaths” many of which are still in use today.
Zounds! – from God’s wounds
Egad! – from Oh God
Gadzooks! – from God’s hooks (i.e. nails on the cross)[1]
