Start: Home | Finish: Amicalola Falls State Park | Miles: 0 | Total: 0
Jason (12 year old son who is accompanying me for the first week, through the Smokies) and I left the house at 9:00 am to deliver resupply boxes around. Dropped one off, an ammo can cache, at Road to Nowhere, Bryson City. Then we grabbed a burger at the Tuckasegee Tavern. By the time we were on the road again, it dawned on me that we did not have time to hit both Webb Brothers in Reliance and Iron Bridge Cafe in Blue Ridge before they closed. I decided to drop the Reliance box at Copper Inn in Ducktown, instead. But they told me that they would not shuttle (i.e. pick my up at the trail 8 miles away in exchange for me buying a night’s stay at their motel) – contrary to what I was told the last time I asked. Deal breaker. So we went to Reliance, and I will just wing it – buy groceries or whatever – when I get to Iron Bridge in 2 1/2 weeks. Later it dawned on me that I could have just dropped the box off at their front doorstep, and it would have made the same difference.
We set up camp at Amicalola – really just an RV park, not conducive to hammocks. We had to go up in to the trees to find a spot to hang.
We drove in to Dawsonville for Mexican. That itself was a comedy of errors. The iPhone map and GPS kept giving us conflicting directions to the restaurant, so we went to the first place we saw. It turned out to be disappointingly disgusting – Jason put his hand in a puddle of baby vomit when we sat down. I finally located the place we meant to go, just as the chips arrived. We left, and the waitress did not even make us pay for our drinks. They probably get that all the time.
